AboveGround Magazine: The First 5 With Lyriciss [INTERVIEW]
At 22-years-old, DC-based hip-hop artist Lyriciss is described as a “new-age businessman”. A production deal with EQuinox Professionals, guidance from Inner Loop Records and placement on URB Magazine’s “Next 1000” list are all sure signs of a bright and promising future. His most recent project, the 2010 mixtape titled The Practice (download here), was well received not only in the DMV-area but across North America. Also known for an energetic stage presence, Lyriciss has opened for hip-hop greats including, but not limited to, AZ, Blu & Exile, Devin The Dude, Killah Priest, Tanya Morgan and Pro’Verb.
To continue expanding his fanbase, Lyriciss has taken part in this week’s First 5. Check it out below.
1. Tell us something no one knows about you.
I have 6 toes. Nah, I’m kidding. Um… I’m pretty sure I’m dyslexic, even though I’ve never been diagnosed. Nobody knows that one. But I constantly say/type the right things in the wrong order without even noticing it.
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
Inspiration. That’s the biggest thing. I try to make music that people can feel. Music nowadays is so distant and materialistic. There’s a place and time for that, like the club, but it’s so oversaturated that no one can REALLY relate to that music all the time. That’s just not realistic, so I write a lot of my music from the common-man perspective. People don’t realize how therapeutic that can be for people that are truly in the struggle.
3. What is one of your biggest regrets?
I have no regrets, honestly. I’ve made mistakes, yeah…no regrets, though. I’ve learned from every single mistake I’ve made, and I feel like I needed those lessons to be where I am today. Those that regret didn’t learn from the experience…they just felt inconvenienced by it.
4. What’s one of your greatest hip-hop memories
Man, at this point, it definitely has to be opening up for Rock The Bells, thanks to my brother Pro’Verb, a fellow artist under EQuinox Professionals and really one of my best friends at this point. Nothing can top that until I go on tour myself. I met so many legends and performed for the biggest crowd to date at Rock The Bells. I linked up with young talented dudes like Fashawn and just had a great day FULL of dope music. Nothing can really top that experience for me.
5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully alive and still making/performing music, with even more fans. Having conversations with my daughter, guiding her through life. Maybe even married, who knows? In 5 years… I just want to be happy.
